For anyone new to the term
What is a walī?
The word walī simply means guardian or representative. In the context of nikāḥ (Islamic marriage), the walī is the person who looks after a sister's interests — usually her father, or a close male relative — and who represents her in dealings with prospective spouses and their families.
Why the walī matters
The walī helps protect, advise, and represent — not control. Their role is to make sure the process moves forward with dignity, that questions are asked properly, and that the candidate isn't placed alone in a situation that compromises hayāʾ or family trust. In most Islamic schools of thought a sister's nikāḥ is conducted with the involvement of her walī.
Who can act as a walī
Usually it is the father. If the father is unavailable, the role typically passes to a close male relative (grandfather, brother, paternal uncle). If a sister has no immediate family — for example, a revert or someone isolated from family — a trusted scholar, imām, or community elder may take on this role. MAWADDAH supports this through moderator guidance: explain the situation honestly at application and the team will advise.
A note on translations
You will see the word translated as guardian, representative, or sometimes protector. None of these capture the full meaning on their own — the walī is closer to a trusted family advocate who acts on behalf of, and in consultation with, the sister.
How MAWADDAH uses the walī
Every applicant is asked for walī contact details at signup. Profiles are reviewed privately by moderators first. When a match is approved and both sides accept, a Contact Walī button appears on the match page with three options — Call, WhatsApp, and SMS — wired to the actual walī number provided. Contact happens family-to-family, by phone, outside the app. MAWADDAH has no in-app messaging or calling between candidates.
If you genuinely have nobody
You may enter your own contact details, but please be honest about it. MAWADDAH remains intended for serious nikāḥ. Using the platform for dating or casual courting is grounds for suspension.
